In a spirited, yet friendly, match up between five of North America’s top geothermal design firms, Salas O’Brian took the top prize in this year’s NY-GEO Top Job Competition. The Wisconsin based company was able to retrofit an entire college campus, replacing a central steam system with high efficiency geothermal. They gained extra points from the judges for their innovative use of horizontal drilling, which allowed them to reduce the size of the bore field by leveraging the horizontal distance traveled to connect each building together. The Salas team was able to turn a disadvantage from the steam system (due to steam losses) into an advantage for a geothermal system.

There is no second prize in the competition, but Energy Catalyst was considered one of the favorites with their innovative double hybrid heat pump. Energy Catalyst congratulates Salas O’Brian for winning this national contest.
